The storyline that is most interesting early in the week was the fact that all seven of the previous major champions at Southern Hills led after 36 holes. It is difficult to gain ground quickly due to its difficulty.
This course is different than any in recent major history. There are also forecasts for Friday afternoon thunderstorms. Will the course be softer this weekend, making it easier to get back from behind? We will have to wait and see.
Let’s now enjoy the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.
PGA Championship 2022 updates
11.25 a.m. Rory, Tiger miss their birdie attempts at the fringe on No. 17. Spieth also makes par. Although the marquee group has started to cool down, McIlroy is still in first place at four under while Woods remains at one under. Justin Rose and Davis Riley have joined Max Homa, Will Zalatoris at three under. Cameron Smith, on the other hand, is starting to slow at two over through eight. It’s still early. It’s very, very early.
11.07 a.m.: Rory could not make a fifth consecutive birdie on No. 16 but he’ll happily settle for par at the 532-yard Par 4. McIlroy missed the green from fairway bunker and chipped to two feet to avoid dropping a shot. Jordan Spieth doesn’t have the same luck and makes a second consecutive bogey to drop to one over. Woods is still at one under after a solid par.
10 :47 a.m. Rory McIlroy sat with his daughter in front of a painting of himself and said ” That’s when daddy was good.” Poppy, your daddy’s still really, really good. Rory just made his fourth consecutive birdie, putting him in the lead at four over. He also managed to catch up two shots against his playing partners, as Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods bogeyed par-4 15.
10:33 a.m.: BANG! Tiger hits a 15-footer to score birdie on the par-3 14th, 221 yards. Woods is now at two under after his second birdie, but he trails Rory McIlroy who birdies the hole from the same spot. Jordan Spieth settles on par on the tricky par 3 to stay at one under. This marquee group has fared well.
10 :16 a.m. It turned out that Rory and Spieth were both fine in the front bunker. However, Woods ended up with the most difficult shot after air-mailing green from 88 yards inside the back bunker. Tiger managed to cozie one up to three feet from an awkward lie to save par and keep him at one under. Spieth missed his birdie attempt from 10 feet, but Rory converted his birdie to make it two under. He is one behind Max Homa, Will Zalatoris. Can you imagine Golf Twitter if its favorite sons continue this trend?
10 :08 a.m. While we’ve heard much about the length of Southern Hills’ par 5s, after seeing the booming drives on No. 13: Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy made easy choices to play for the green in two. Both failed to score in the greenside bunker, which also has a bush. We will have to wait and see which lies they come up with. Tiger will be running less than 100 yards from the fairway, as he laid down on the left side.
9 :52 a.m.Spieth also makes birdie with his nine-footer, joining Rory and Tiger at 1-under after their three first holes. With the featured group of the morning, it’s a great vibe.
9 :39 a.m. Three tee shots on 12th. Tiger Woods was able to hit the fairway with a controlled stinger iron from the tee. Jordan Spieth thought that he had lost his tee shot to the left, but the hole doglegs left the hole and his ball bounced onto the fairway. Rory McIlroy then took on the dogleg, and he blasted it down approximately 330 yards down the fairway. There are many ways to do this!
Rory was only 100 yards closer to Tiger’s hole, but Tiger still putts it at 20 feet at the 12th. Rory’s approach from only 95 yards is about 3 feet. This gives him a chance at joining Tiger at 1-under.
We have a new leader at the top of our board. Will Zalatoris just made a long birdie on the par-4 12th hole, to tie Robert MacIntyre (Y.E.). Yang and John Daly are at the top of the leaderboard.
Daly had quite an enjoyable morning. Daly almost missed his approach on the first hole… hit the flag with a different approach at 3 and then hit the hole with the chip at 7. It was a great start for the 1991 PGA champion.
9 :34 a.m.Good runs by Tiger, Rory, and Spieth for birdie…they’ll settle for pars on the par-3 11th. Rory’s birdie bid actually leapt over the ball-marker at Spieth… it’s the second time that we’ve seen this happen on the coverage. It’s kind of bizarre…
9 :26 a.m.Tiger Spieth, Rory and Spieth all find the green on the par-3 11th. The wind was starting to pick up a bit, but it is still quite benign. With stronger winds forecast for the rest of the week, now is the best time to take advantage.
9 :21 a.m. This was a DART by Tiger Woods on his 10th hole. He hit the perfect knockdown wedge at 3 feet, giving him a great chance to make a birdie on Day 1.
We are used to Tiger’s rocky start at majors on the first holes. This is a great way for him to start his day. Tiger began on the 10th hole when he won the 2007 PGA. He also birdied the first hole.
Tiger’s one back to… John Daly, Y.E. Yang. This year? Yang chipped in for birdie on the par-3 sixth hole. JD scored a birdie on the par-5 fifth. Southern Hills throwback Thursday.
9:11 am.:Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are all on the fairway at the 10th hole… Let’s get started!
On Wednesday, observers at Southern Hills noted that Tiger was moving slower than Tuesday and Monday. We’ll be watching how Tiger holds up Thursday morning.
8 :50 a.m. The birdies are coming in now! Sam Horsfield scores a birdie on the first hole. Ryan Palmer bogeys a 12th-hole putt to reach 1-under. Michael Block, a California club pro, started the tournament with a birdie on the 10th.
After a great shot at the 10th hole, Xander Schauffele joins the group at 1-under. His wedge spun perfectly within two feet… and the X-Man continues his hot streak in Dallas. At -1, we now have seven players at the top of the leaderboard.
8 :39 a.m. One of the featured groups for the morning is now at the tee! Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, and Hideki Makatsuyama all reach the fairway on the 10th hole with less than a driver.
8 :24 a.m.Let us give credit to Matt Bouchert who is a club pro at Isleworth C.C. Windermere, Fla. joins John Daly, Robert MacIntyre, at the top of the early leaderboard on Day 1
8:17 a.m.: JD!!! John Daly almost threw his wedge from 133 feet out, but then he hit the 5-footer for birdie. At 56, the 1991 PGA champion is the leaderboard’s top player! We had a win last year at the age of 50… Okay, let’s not get ahead. It was a great start by the popular, long-hitting past champion.
Bobby Mac started his round with a birdie, too… at the par-4 10th green. Early on, we have a tie.
8 :05 a.m. The action also takes place off the 10th Tee! Alex Noren, Robert MacIntyre, and Ryan Palmer all find the fairway.
8:00 AM: Southern Hills is officially underway! John Daly and Shaun Micheel, former PGA champions, are back at Southern Hills! Yang finds the fairway on the downhill par-4 opener.
Long John actually drove it 343 meters to begin the day… The 56-year old is loose and warm up early!
Two tees will be available for the players (1 and 10) at 7 a.m. (which is 8 am eastern time) John Daly, Shaun Micheel, and Y.E. were the past champions. Yang will soon start the proceedings on the first Tee.
These are the pin positions for the first round. It doesn’t seem like the PGA of America placed many pins in the middle of the Maxwell greens. We are thrilled at the challenges faced by players in controlling their approach and taking short shots around these green complexes.
